the people sitting at the table
are grandfather and granddaughter
she's telling him some stories
about her mother,
and he's laughing a lot
and he says, "you really need to write these stories down"
and she says, "gosh nah i dunno"
and he says, "nah i mean it,
they're damn good stories"

a thing people say about social media sometimes is:
ooh i did something and didn't post about it
did it really happen
all sarcastic, like it's a joke
but it seems sort of serious to me

*

i have a habit of eavesdropping
and putting strangers' conversations
into my poems
it's not stealing,
it's like picking up scraps
or five cent pieces
that people don't care about dropping

*

i keep a diary
which is mostly drawings
of things i've eaten or read
when i go back and colour the old drawings in
they don't trigger any memories

*

i asked my uncle how he'd feel
if he caught a stranger writing down something he was saying
and he said:
"i'd be bloody astonished
that i'd said anything worth writing down"
